Former diplomat Sanjay Verma has been appointed as a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The Personnel Ministry gave this information in a statement. Verma, a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, took the oath of office and secrecy as a UPSC member in Delhi on Thursday, according to the statement. UPSC Chairman Manoj Soni administered the oath to him. Verma was India’s ambassador to Spain and Andorra, Ethiopia, Djibouti and the African Union. He has been Consul General in Dubai, Counselor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Embassy of India in Beijing, Spokesperson (Press, Information and Culture) at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Second Secretary for Press and Political Affairs at the Embassy of India in Manila and Economic and Commercial Affairs in the Embassy of India in Hong Kong. Had been an officer.

Sanjay, who hails from Mumbai, studied at Wilson College and then obtained his bachelor’s degree in Economics from Jai Hind College, Mumbai University. He holds a master’s degree in International Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He received a Fellowship in International Studies from the University Grants Commission of India and was the recipient of the first Dorabji Tata Scholarship.

Sanjay is a university level hockey player. His interests are reading, music, popular Indian culture and films.

UPSC is headed by a Chairman and can have a maximum of 10 members. The tenure of each member of the Commission is for six years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. UPSC conducts examinations every year in three stages – Preliminary, Main and Main – to select officers for civil services including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS). Interview is conducted by Civil Services Examination. Apart from civil services, UPSC conducts recruitment examinations for many posts including NDA, CDS, Forest Service, Engineering Services.
