The University Grants Commission (UGC) has allowed all third/final year Undergraduate (UG) students to pursue fourth year studies to pursue Honors or Research degree. These students will now be able to register under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). According to the UGC circular, however, these students will have to choose a college which has a post graduate center to pursue their fourth year studies. Also, a bridge course will have to be done to cover the gap. This bridge course will be decided by the respective universities only.

This initiative will benefit 91 autonomous colleges across Maharashtra, which have decided to implement four-year UG courses under the New Education Policy (NEP) from the current academic year. UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar said, ‘Students currently enrolled and actively studying in UG courses under CBCS are eligible for the four-year course. The concerned university may offer bridge courses to fill their gap in the extended courses, which can be through any mode, online or offline.

Jagdish Kumar said, ‘It is also necessary to provide this facility so that the existing students can take advantage of the four-year UG course. More than 200 universities have successfully implemented four-year UG courses, leveraging their PG courses and research facilities. In such a situation, these universities are encouraged to motivate the enrolled students to extend their studies till the fourth year.

Director of Higher Education Shailendra Deolankar said, “At present, all postgraduate departments of universities in the state have the CBCS system. But this decision will benefit those 91 autonomous colleges which are implementing the New Education Policy (NEP) from the current academic year. From the next academic year, the state government is set to implement NEP in all colleges; Therefore CBCS will be started and students will get benefits under NEP.
