All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has given a gift to girl students by launching a scholarship scheme on Friday. The Council has announced a new scholarship scheme for UG Management/Computer Applications (BBA/BCA/BMS) girl students studying in AICTE approved institutions. Under this, every eligible meritorious student from economically weaker background will be given Rs 25,000 annually. This scholarship will be given to a total of 3000 eligible girl students from AICTE approved institutions across the country. The council will spend Rs 7.5 crore annually for three years on this scheme. At a function organized on the occasion of International Women’s Day, AICTE Chairman Professor T.G. Sitaram announced this plan. During this, Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Education, Rohini Bhajibhakare (IAS) was present as the chief guest.


AICTE Chairman Prof. T.G. Sitaram said that AICTE is working to empower women and unleash their full potential in technical and management education. We already have Pragati scheme for engineering students. Since BBA, BCA and BMS courses have come under the purview of AICTE from this year itself, this special scheme has been launched to promote gender equality, provide affordable education and empower girls in management education. AICTE promotes an inclusive environment where women can grow and play leading roles in the fields of engineering and management.

AICTE Chairman said that enrollment of girl students in AICTE approved institutions has increased in recent years. In the year 2022-23, 39 percent girl students have taken admission whereas in the year 2020-21 it was 30 percent and in 2021-22 it was 36 percent. The number of girl students taking admission in engineering diploma and graduate courses has also increased. In the year 2022-23, 29 percent women took admission in engineering diploma and 44 percent took admission in engineering graduate courses. In the year 2019-20, the enrollment of women in engineering graduation was 29 percent, which has increased to 31 percent and 40 percent in two consecutive years. Pro. T.G. Sitaram said that encouraging and supporting women in engineering and management will be helpful towards achieving the goal of a developed India by the year 2047.

AICTE has taken these initiatives for girl students:
1. AICTE Pragati Scholarship provides encouragement and support to girl students for technical education. Under this, a total of 5,000 scholarships are distributed every year among meritorious girl students to pursue technical education.

2. AICTE has signed an agreement with Amazon. Under Amazon Wow, girl students studying in engineering colleges across the country will be empowered with the skills required to thrive in the technology industry.

3. Under the Tech Saksham program of AICTE, more than 19,000 students have been trained by the year 2021, out of which 14,000 are girls.

4. AICTE has started Women Entrepreneurship in Waste Management Programme. Its objective is to motivate girl students to adopt waste management entrepreneurship.
