NEET UG, MBBS Seats: A parliamentary committee said there is a need to increase medical (MBBS and MS) seats in both UG and PG courses. The committee said the government’s current plan to set up new medical colleges attached to district or referral hospitals will be fulfilled only if the MBBS and AIIMS seats are increased. The Parliamentary Standing Committee related to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in its 157th report ‘Quality of Medical Education in India’ presented in the Rajya Sabha, said that the shortage of medical seats in both UG and PG courses is a serious issue, which needs immediate attention. needed.

The committee said in its report that around 20 lakh medical students appear for NEET UG every year, while the number of seats available is only one lakh. This demand far exceeds the supply. Similarly, the number of seats available at PG level is much less than the demand. It recognized the urgency of addressing this challenge while maintaining the quality of medical education at the highest standard.

The panel further recommended to the Union Health Ministry that it is necessary to make full use of the existing infrastructure. Ensuring that all available resources and facilities are used efficiently can help accommodate a large number of students without compromising the quality of education.

Additionally, streamlining the admission process by implementing a standardized national entrance examination can improve fairness and transparency in seat allocation.
