IIT graduates are known for their tremendous skills, creativity and unique way of thinking. This is the reason why every year big IT companies of India and abroad offer them huge salary packages. The excellent job offers available in IIT campus placements attract students appearing for engineering entrance exams. But securing a seat in IIT is a very difficult task. Out of about 12 to 14 lakh students who appear for JEE Main, only 2.5 lakh are selected for IIT entrance. Students who perform well in IIT entrance are able to get a place in IIT. To get into IIT, many promising students drop their entire year and give a second attempt.

The dream of most of the students appearing for JEE Main is to get a B.Tech in Computer Science seat at IIT Bombay. Top rankers of JEE Advanced choose computer science courses from IIT Bombay. You can say that the race beyond getting into IIT is to get entry into the B.Tech in Computer Science course of IIT Bombay. But how would you feel to know that a few years ago, an IIT entrance test topper had left the creamiest course, IIT Bombay’s B.Tech in Computer Science, after just one year of study. Chitrang Murdia, who secured All India Rank 1 in JEE Advanced 2014, left IIT and took the path of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the world’s number institute.

Chitrang Murdia has revealed on his LinkedIn profile that he completed his graduation in Physics from MIT in 2018. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 2023.

Murdia once said that his decision to leave IIT and pursue his passion would inspire students. Speaking to Humans of Bombay, he had said, ‘I have seen that students who are good in Physics and Mathematics are making sheepish moves to get admission in courses like Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. My decision will definitely boost the morale of those students who want to increase their interest in pure science but are unable to do so due to family pressure or money.

He said, ‘Everyone was surprised by my decision and my friends were also included in it. People used to say that you are a child and do not know how to take big decisions in your life. They used to say that after getting an engineering degree from IIT, you will earn lakhs.
