A case of illegally increasing seats in MBBS, MS and MD courses in medical colleges has come to light. Fake permission letters were issued to medical colleges to increase seats in MBBS, MS and MD courses. Delhi Police is investigating the matter on the basis of the rules of medical education and the complaint of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the body that monitors medical colleges. Two senior NMC officials and four to five medical colleges are also under police investigation. A senior police officer has said that an arrest may soon be made in this case.

NMC came to know about this scam and fraudulent granting of MBBS seats in the month of August last year. After this, the commission canceled the permission and ordered an investigation. A complaint was also lodged with the police. The police had registered an FIR under Section 66C of the IT Act and sections of criminal conspiracy and cheating of the IPC. According to the report published in Times of India, AK Singh, Deputy Secretary of the Commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), said in the complaint that various medical colleges were receiving fake letters of resignation from the official email ID ds.marb@nmc.org.in. Permission (LOP) has been issued. This email ID belongs to a Deputy Secretary rank officer who was earlier looking after the functioning of MARB. Investigation revealed that another officer had made some changes in the NMC website so that the permission letter appeared genuine.

After this, the Commission had issued a notice in the month of August last year itself making it clear that the medical colleges and stakeholders should not consider the permission letter valid. NMC had said that the permission letters have not been issued by the Member/Chairman of MARB. The permission letters received by medical colleges are fake, they should not be considered as permission from MARB. The Commission had said that strict action will be taken against the guilty person as per law.
