IIT BTech: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras became the first institute to implement sports quota in undergraduate courses. There will be two additional seats related to this in each course from the academic session 2024-25. Institute director V Kamakoti gave the information on Friday. At present there is no sports quota in IIT, whereas sports quota exists in many major universities of the country including Delhi University. The Director informed that two seats per course will be allotted through Sports Excellence Admission (SEA). In this, one seat will be common, while the other seat will be only for women.
The purpose of implementing sports quota is to reward and encourage students who have achieved a certain level of excellence in the sport of their choice. Candidates eligible for admission under SEA must have secured a position in the Common Rank List (CRL) or Category Wise Rank List in JEE Advanced and have participated in at least one sporting event at the national or international level in the last four years. Have won a medal.
A separate Sports Rank List (SRL) will be prepared on the basis of total score obtained by the candidates based on their performance in the specific list of sports. Seat allotment will be done on the basis of SRL only.
The proposal of IIT Madras to start sports quota admission in UG courses was placed before the IIT Council last year. Candidates of sports like Aquatic, Athletics, Chess, Cricket, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Squash, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Volleyball and Weightlifting will be able to avail this benefit. National and international level games will be given different weightage according to their level.
