It is noteworthy that many universities and colleges are taking applications for admission in MPhil (Master of Philosophy) course. After this UGC has issued this notice.

UGC had earlier declared MPhil degree illegal and directed higher educational institutions not to offer MPhil course. Universities were instructed to stop admission in MPhil from the academic year 2023.

In an official notice, the UGC said, “It has come to the notice of the UGC that some universities are still calling for fresh applications for M.Phil. In this regard, it is to be brought to the notice that the M.Phil degree is not a recognized degree. UGC (Ph.D. “Rule No. 14 of the Minimum Qualifications and Procedure) Rules, 2022 clearly states that higher educational institutions will not offer M.Phil course.” MPhil degree courses were banned in universities and degree colleges after the UGC notified this act on 7 November 2022.

The Commission has asked universities to immediately stop admission to any MPhil program for the academic year 2023-24. UGC had stopped the MPhil program in November 2022.
