India’s great journey in Olympics begins
India’s contribution in starting the Asian Games may have been important, but the progress in terms of performance was disappointing. This year turned out to be a milestone from this point of view. This happened for the first time that India won a total of 107 medals with 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. 12 medals were bagged on the last day of the games. Last time there were only 70 medals. India sent an official contingent of athletes for the first time to the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. Famous businessman Dorabji Tata will always be remembered in India’s Olympic journey. The ‘Indian Olympic Association’ formed under his chairmanship selected athletes for the 1920 Olympics. Tata convinced the then Bombay Governor George Lloyd to allow India to play in the Olympics. In the 1948 London Olympics, the Indian hockey team won its fourth consecutive gold medal and its first as an independent nation. It should be hoped that Indian players will create new records of victory in the next Olympics.
