In Gujarat, 44 percent seats in engineering colleges remained vacant during the year 2023. More than 62,000 seats remained vacant in the state. Gujarat government gave this information to the assembly on Thursday. It also includes self-financed institutions. Apart from this, according to official data presented in the state Legislative Assembly, more than 32 percent seats (7,742 seats) in Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA) courses also remained vacant last year.

State Higher and Technical Education Minister Rushikesh Patel said that there are 1,40,852 seats for engineering degree and diploma courses in various government, aided and self-financed colleges in Gujarat. He said that out of these 1,40,852 seats, 71,629 seats are for degree engineering courses, while 69,223 seats are for diploma engineering courses.

The minister told the House that last year, 78,540 seats (55.76 per cent) were filled, while 62,311 seats (44.23 per cent) of these degree and diploma courses remained vacant. Patel said that in 2023, a total of 38,811 seats for degree engineering and 23,501 seats for diploma engineering remained vacant.

BTech: You will be able to do B.Tech along with job, the course will start in these 8 colleges of UP including AKTU.

Explaining the reason for the seats remaining vacant, the Minister said that the reason for this could be that students are turning to prestigious institutions like IITs and NITs and choosing the option of studying abroad. Patel said in his written reply that since the eligibility for admission to diploma colleges is to pass 10th class, the seats remain vacant. Students choose to study in class 11th or pursue other courses like IIT and Nursing.
